AAA batteries are commonly used in small electronic devices, such as television remote controls, MP3 players and digital cameras. Devices that operate at the same voltage and require higher currents use larger AA batteries.
AA batteries have three times the capacity of AAA batteries. However, with the increase in efficiency and miniaturization of modern electronics, many products that had been designed to use AA batteries are being replaced by models that accept AAA batteries.
An AAA battery measures 44.5mm in length and 10.5mm in diameter. AAA alkaline batteries weigh approximately 11.5 grams each, while AAA lithium batteries weigh approximately 7.6 grams, and rechargeable batteries (Ni-MH) typically weigh between 14 and 15 grams.
The rated voltage of AAA alkaline and lithium batteries is 1.5 V, while Ni-MH or NiCd batteries are 1.2 V. The capacity of AAA alkaline batteries is typically 900 to 1155 mAh (3240 to 4158 coulombs).
